Maldon Town in market for two players

Thursday, July 17, 2008, 08:00

MALDON Town hope to sign an experienced centre-half and striker this week as manager Russell Tanner continues to re-build his Ryman League Division One North side after several close season departures.

“Both players are keen to sign for us and both will be assets to the side,” explained Tanner who declined to reveal names until they have put pen to paper.

It's understood one player is from a higher level and the other from the same level as Maldon with Tanner adding: ''I'm quietly confident that they will sign and we're still short of one or two more players but there's no panic as we have plenty of time to wait for the right ones to become available.”

Tanner is also awaiting the outcome of striker Jamie Ricks' trial period at Ryman League Premier Division side Margate.

“He has been training with them and is due to take part in one of their friendly matches tonight (Thursday), so we will know by the weekend whether he signs for them or not,” explained Tanner.

“Obviously we would never stand in a player's way of moving up but if it doesn't work out then naturally he will be with us for the start of the season.”

Tanner, alongside his new assistant Stuart Nethercott continues to look at potential new players and several have been attending training sessions at the club.

“The turnouts have been excellent and we've a good mix of youth and experience and I expect to make some more signings before the end of the month when more players always become available just before the season starts,” he explained.

Town will open their league campaign with three tough games - away to Enfield Town on August 16, at home to East Thurrock United on August 19, and that match is followed by another home game, against Ware Town, on Saturday August 23.

“We had a similar start last season against three potential promotion sides and did well picking up points so I'll be quite happy for a repeat of that,” he added Tanner.

“Overall our preparations are going really well and I know we've lost some players but that always happens but we are well on our way of rebuilding the side.”

Town open their pre-season friendlies with a visit to Harwich & Parkeston tomorrow (Friday) evening followed by a home match against Stanway Rovers on Tuesday.
