BRAINTREE: Quinton set to take Iron post

Thursday, January 08, 2009, 08:00

BRAINTREE Town caretaker player-manager Bradley Quinton looks set to carry on in charge at Cressing Road until the end of the season and possibly even beyond.

But if he is finally given the go ahead to take on the role permanently, an experienced joint non-playing manager, sitting in the dugout, will be brought in to help him and the team, particularly when it comes to changing both tactics and players during a game.

Club chairman Lee Harding, who admits to having recently interviewed several well-known faces in non-league football for the job, has confirmed that keeping Quinton on but with an experienced old hand on the touchline is now the favourite way forward.

"Brad has done an exceptionally good job since taking over with three wins, two draws and only one defeat," said Harding. "But more importantly he's got the side back playing the Braintree way which is entertaining football, all the players have a smile on their face and are clearly enjoying their football.

"I feel we are now going in the right direction as we're picking up points and looking up the table rather than staring down at the relegation area.

"Who knows, we could make the play-offs again for the third season which would be a tremendous feat."

Harding said the side's only defeat under Quinton's temporary charge, a 4-0 home loss to Bath City highlighted the need for an experienced and knowledgeable assistant or joint manager.

He added: "On that day he was obviously too involved in his own game and intent on getting everything right but having someone else on the side looking on and able to change things would have helped matters."

But Harding stressed that no definite decision had been taken on the vacant position, revealing: "We're talking to Brad again and it will be the unanimous decision of the board at the end of the day as to what happens."

Quinton's reaction to possibly taking the job permanently remains upbeat but he added: "We'll see how it goes and I'm in constant dialogue with the chairman who is clearly pleased with the way things are going.

"I'm certainly enjoying the job, there's a great spirit in the dressing room and we're getting the results everyone wants which is the important thing at the end of the day.

"I was disappointed that Saturday's home game against Maidenhead United was called off so late because after a winning double over Bishop's Stortford I wanted to keep the momentum going."

Had the game gone ahead the players would have been given Tuesday night off from training but they were called in although they had the comfort of training indoors in a gym.

The Iron go to Bromley on Saturday for a Blue Square South match and Quinton is looking for three more points.

"They're a good footballing side and so are we so it should be a good game and all I want is for us to pick up all three points."
