ANIMAL rights protesters are in danger of taking vital police resources away from the rest of Brentwood, it has been claimed.

The police have been called to a number of protests outside the Elmkirk Ltd slaughterhouse with almost clockwork regularity but as hostilities have threatened to flare, officers have even been pulled from other patrols and incidents.

Adam Cheale, a director of Cheale Meats, said: "It can take police resources away from everywhere else.

"There have got to be more important things they could be doing than coming here.

"I think it will probably continue for a period of time – three months, six months, three years – I do not know. But we have the right to carry on our business as we have been."

He added: "Everyone has got the right to their own opinion and the right to protest, but we have also got the right to carry on with our own business and that is all we are trying to do."

During some of the most tense scenes at a protest earlier this month, police investigated allegations an air rifle was fired towards protesters, while a motorist was cautioned for throwing a water bottle at a protester.

Police officers have also been criticised by activists, after they carried a wheelchair-bound protester away from blocking the entrance to the abattoir. She claims they broke her wheelchair and bruised her legs in the process.

Mr Cheale insists the company has never risen to provocation as trouble has flared outside.

“Ribdiger you talking about Farming or Factory Farming?

I know about thirteen years ago it was banned to use sow stalls for pegnant pigs in the UK and now they are now trying to stop it in europe.

The pigs are still cramped into sheds with no daylight. Pigs are social and inquisitive animals, renowned for being as intelligent as dogs. They will naturally spend their time in family groups, rooting in soil, foraging and exploring. Now imagine what it is like in FACTORY farming they cannot do what comes naturally to them.

All pigs deserve a life outside a cage, barn or shed.

I have dug my hole a bit deeper and I cannot dig anymore so I will not comment anymore and I am fed-up with you being rude to me. You are a flesh eater and get very angry”

“No I am not connected to Cheale Meats but I have workd with farm livestock all my life. What you do not realise is that your blogs expose your total ignorance as far as farm animals are concerned. Never heard of the stall and tether regs for the UK? Thought so. Any idea how pigs are reared and kept today. No I thought not. Pigs kept with their mothers 3 or 4 months! You really know nothing about pigs. Intelligent pigs at a few months old? Good heavens. Confusing animal instinct with intelligence - try going back to school. The more you write the worse your position becomes. you really must educate yourself. Try finding out the facts instead of believing hysterical propaganda. even repeating it. Farmers not caring for their stock? Do you know any livestock farmers? No, thought not. Farmers not caring for their stock would be out of business in no time. That you have never been on a farm is obvious. But please keep on giving the rest of us your gems on livestock you have never kept. Keep digging the hole your in.”

“Ribdiger- (Mr Cheale/Cheale worker) What sort of noise do pigs make when they are being abused like punched in the face, hit with a bat, cigarettes stubbed out on them, urnated on etc??????

As for RSPCA freedom food I would not give you anything for it with the cruelty that has been uncovered by Hillside Animal Sanctuary and other animal charities. They are tricking the public into paying more money for the meat thinking the animals are having a lovely life before they go to slaughter.

It is not only the slaughter of Pigs it is that they are born in metal-barred cages known as farrowing trapped which keep their mother trapped. The piglets can reach their mothers teats but she has so little room that she cannot even turn around. The piglets suffer , too. The stress, caused by their unnatural, overcrowded conditions, is so bad that they bite their mother's teats and each other's tails instead of reducing stress by improving their living conditions, farmers cut off the ends of their tails and pull out some teeth - they are mutilated to save money. Naturally, piglets would stay with their mother for three of four months, but on today's farms they are taken away when they are just three weeks old. They are killed by the time they are just six months old. The only daylight that these pigs see is when they go to slaughter so imagine the sadness and fear they must be feeling, as it is a fact that they are more intelligent than dogs and I reckon more intelligent than Ribdiger (Mr Cheale/Cheale Worker).
Factory Farm animals are bred to die within a very short time. These farmers could not care less about the animal welfare after all it all to do with profit and more profit. I have known farmers that have stopped sending their animals to slaughter and just grow veg and fruit, as they know that slaughter is not humane.

If a member of public treated their pets like factory farm animals are treated it would be illegal, to treat pigs (factory farm animals) with so much cruelty it is legal the law is all wrong.”

“"their eyes are full of terror" - Have you any idea that sounds to a person who has kept pigs? No. You havn't a clue. You actually think that the pigs know all about slaughterhouses and have the same understanding as a human being. You think someone whispered in their ear on loading and told them where they were going? You are really on another planet. Emotive language born of l ignorance. You hear then screaming as they are slaughtered? Rubbish. For a start pigs squeal not scream. Just go on a pig farm and hear the pigs at meal times or when pigs are being moved or when they sometimes scrap. They squeal - it's perfectly normal piggie behaviour. The one time they do not squeal is when they are being stunned and slaughtered. Not that you want to know this it does not fit with your total lack of knowledge. You cannot honestly belive you know more than the livestock experts (including the RSPCA). Reckon you've looked at my blogs - not read them. Very glad to hear your not on benefits - pity it could not be said of you all.”

“The issue is not about meat consumption or how people either side of the gate earn their living, it is about non-prosecution of abuse that has been acknowledged by the proprietors. If there are not enough Police to attend to the needs of the county, it is not the fault of the protesters, it suggests generally poor management of resources. Animal welfare does not involve abuse and violent death, a fact bizarrely ignored by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who seem to have a very poor understanding of the term 'Freedom'.”

“Ribdiger- all these protesters work and use their holidays up or alter their shift so they can protest. Some are retired that have worked hard all their life. Some are mothers who have to pay for child minders to come on these protest and all are very compassionate human beings. So Ribdiger before you make stupid comment that you know nothing about keep you comments to yourself.
Mr Cheale said "Everyone has got the right to their own opinion and the right to protest, but we have also got the right to carry on with our own business and that is all we are trying to do." What about the animals rights they don't want to be tortured, abused before they are slaughtered also all they want is to live just like any of us. When you stand outside cheale's and see the trucks go in with the pigs (6.000 pigs a week) their eyes are full of terror, you hear them screaming as they are slaughtered so I hope people when they have their, bacon in the morning, their ham in a sandwich at lunch time and their pork chop for dinner they know what that pig as gone through for their taste buds and is it worth it.”

“Just by calling it a rant does not answer the question though does it? You may work but bet many do not. I have looked into the background of some of the people in your movement and you should do the same. If your a decent person you should have nothing to do with Animal Aid. Your either conning others or being conned yourself. Give credit to the company for their openess. Did you read the Brentwood Gazette's article on their visit to the factory? Nothing was hidden and the reporter had full access. The pigs in the stockpens looked clean, healthy and content. Certainly not the picture you attempt to put across. Be a veggie by all means - it's your right just as it's mine to eat meat.”
