THE folk at The Hare in Roxwell know a thing or two about pies. They even called their company Pie and Pints Inns.

So when we tried to find the secret of the perfect pie we didn't need to look far.

The pub has been open two-and-half-years and each Thursday hold a 'Pie and Pint' night – featuring a 'guest pie' on top of their regular menu.

And the trick to the perfect pie? Fresh ingredients and a healthy dollop of locally brewed beer.

Their popular steak and ale offering, for example, features their own Golden Crust beer and Essex chuck steak.

In fact, the Brentwood Brewing Company beer is also used in the pub's onion rings and fish batter.

"All our meat comes from local farms," said co-owner Gary Downham, 47. "We meet personally with the abattoir and visit all our farmers – so we know our pies are made of the best ingredients possible.

"Pies are traditional English food and we want to continue the legacy and make people fall back in love with the dish."

The Hare's owners are looking to buy another site in Essex and are in talks with a company to supply 'ready meal' pies to the big supermarkets.

"We love pies and we want people far and wide to experience our cooking and give them a taste of proper pub food in their own homes," added Gary.

A 'Pie and a Pint' costs £11.95 on a Thursday and the pub takes bookings for tables of six or more people. Call 01245 248788 to find out more.
