Passengers on the train that brought down overhead cables on Monday evening gave up waiting for instructions and climbed out on to the track.
John Andrews, 46, of Great Baddow, said: “The cables were banging against the train, we waited ages and eventually we jumped out on the track.”
Lauren Binks, 22, of Springfield, said: “We had to walk from Brentwood Station to the A12 to meet my mum.”
A police spokesman said: “Essex Police received information a number of people were walking alongside the A12 at junction 13 (Ingatestone) following disruption on the train lines, just after 8pm on Monday.
“While it is not illegal, we would advise people against this course of action, due to the potential dangers of walking adjacent to traffic travelling at speeds of 70mph.”
