Ongar homes decision expected

Wednesday, June 25, 2008, 08:00

ANXIOUS residents are waiting with bated breath for a final decision over a major housing development that will change the face of the town.

Outline planning permission has already been granted for 52 houses and flats on the former railway land at Station Approach, Ongar – but the town council will meet tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss the final detailed plans which were submitted to Epping Forest District Council last week.

A final decision is expected within the next three weeks.

The site has been the subject of a long-running development wrangle with strong objections from the community, including Ongar Railway Preservation Society, which argued that any development would scupper plans to reinstate a commuter railway service.

The David Wilson Homes development would consist of 39 two and three-storey houses and flats, along with 13 self-contained flats and support facilities for young parents.

Bowes Drive resident Dennis Mortimer said: “They are building houses but not providing enough facilities for people living in the area. The school is fully subscribed and you cannot get on the books at doctors' surgeries.”

Other residents are worried about traffic and parking problems. The incorporation of the young parents' unit through East Thames Housing Group has also sparked controversy.

Brian Hatch, of Love Lane, said: “I get the impression that we are being presented with other people's social problems. I'm concerned that these people are being shipped in here from other places and the council is having this thrust upon them. I think it's a step backwards for the town.”

The facility would include 13 flats along with a communal kitchen, lounge and play area, providing accommodation for young parents, mainly single mothers under the age of 21, from the Epping Forest, Brentwood and Uttlesford areas.

Alan Hall, director of housing for Epping Forest District Council, said: “People will be housed at this site for nine months and will receive advice and learn parenting skills.

“When they are ready, we will look to rehouse them in their own districts.”
