Havering man hits Lotto jackpot with fortune cookie

Wednesday, July 16, 2008, 08:00

A LOTTO jackpot winner scooped a fortune after getting his numbers from a fortune cookie.

Lucky Danny Williams won his share of £2,355,880 by playing the same six numbers that appeared in a novelty dessert.

Now £235,588 richer, the engineer told of the moment he realised he was one of 10 people who had beaten million-to-one odds.

Danny, 23, said: “A lady from the National Lottery called me to say I'd won. At first I thought it was a prank call. It just didn't sink in.

“I didn't want to tell anyone until I knew it was definite and it was killing me having to keep quiet.”

Danny broke the news of his win to girlfriend Christina Vlahoyannis, 22, and his two sisters with bottles of expensive champagne on ice.

“They were absolutely ecstatic but they thought I was having a laugh at first,” he said.

Danny's incredible luck story began four years ago when he tucked into a Chinese meal while on holiday in Greece.

Danny, who lives in a flat in Harold Hill, said: “The cookie had some wise saying on it and at the bottom, six numbers. Looking back I did think there might be something special in those numbers.

“From that day on I played those numbers. I'd won the odd tenner here and there but I didn't change those numbers because I thought the moment I did would be the day they came up.”

Danny's win is just the latest in a long line of residents in the Romford area to have scored big wins.

Since the launch of The National Lottery in November 1994, a massive £123,933,289.80 in top prizes has been paid out across all games in the RM postcode area – that equates to one major prize-winning ticket in every 6,903 people and makes Romford the third luckiest place in the country.

Danny – who is known as being luckier than most among his family for regularly winning raffles – is determined not to flutter away the cash and invest wisely.

He added: “Christina and I are going on holiday which we booked before I found out I'd won.

“When we come back we might have to go on a bit of a spending spree. But I'm going to be sensible. I'd like to treat myself to a motorbike, then look at buying a house.”
