BUSINESSES could soon advertise themselves to households and road users via Brentwood council's refuse trucks.

With 22,000 households and thousands of daily commuters in Brentwood, the reach for businesses advertising on the side of refuse trucks could be potentially huge, the council says.

Cllr Russell Quirk, chairman of the council's environment committee, said any revenue from the scheme will be used to improve street cleaning.

It is intended that some of the trucks will continue to promote the council's "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" message.

Cllr Quirk said: "This is an opportunity for business to advertise themselves to Brentwood on what are effectively giant, moving billboards.

"The benefit to the council and its residents is that I intend all resulting revenue to be directly used for additional street care over and above that currently, particularly in respect of the borough's high streets. The cleanliness of our streets is one of our key priorities and this initiative allows us to focus further funding without cost to the taxpayer."

The council could decide to adopt the measure at the next environment panel meeting on September 10.

Those businesses interesting on advertising on refuse lorries should contact Jonathan Phillips on 01277 312500.
