The parish room was transformed, decorated with our banners, silver and other memorabilia also scrap books going back decades and tables laid.
The president and her committee had worked their socks off. The food tables groaned with the various array of sandwiches and cakes, prominent among the latter the birthday cake, made and decorated by Mrs Frances Worth. It was all scrumptious and upheld the long standing reputation of our WI. All the planing seemed to work its magic for the whole afternoon.
Thirtyseven members and guests stood for Jerusalem which was a robust rendering and then Mrs Sylvia Butler, our president, welcomed guests and members, thanked all those who had helped in any way and then gave an outline of how the afternoon would progress.
A resume of the past 89 years of records and minuets of meetings was presented by Mrs Enid Isworth. This was followed by an entertainment from Ms Margaret Watson, harpist, who told is a little about her instrument and played a very varied programme showing her versatility. We even had a singsong and she had our feet tapping when she finished with In the Mood. A vote of appreciation was given by Mrs R. Rampe.
Then it was teatime and all showed their delight on what was on offer. After all had had their fill it was time for THE cake. Mrs Jill Elliott , WI adviser, thanked our WI and gave some county information and then with Mrs Butler cut the cake. This was served with sparkling wine and the toast proposed by secretary Mrs Anne Seymour.
The raffle was huge and had most generously been given by members. It was gratifying to note every guest besides members had won a prize.
Before the party ended thanks were given to our WI from various guests and members, but it made our day when a visitor said she had never been to Dormansland W.I. before but she was so delighted with her welcome and the friendliness displayed she hoped she would be invited again.
What more do we need to encourage new members to join us? Come and have a sample afternoon with us. Enquiries to Mrs Anne Seymour 10342 835595.
