The driver of the high speed train from Liverpool St to Southend Victoria was travelling at about 60mph when it struck the man.
British Transport Police rushed to the scene after receiving emergency calls at 6.15am this morning.
A transport police spokesman said: “The driver of the train applied his emergency brakes and sounded his horn, but was unable to avoid striking a man on the tracks.
“The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is believed to be in his 40s, but formal identification is still to take place.”
Police are not treating the incident as suspicious. Officers are working to trace the man's next of kin and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Train services between London and Southend are likely to be affected for several hours.
