A CHELMSFORD schoolgirl has been selected to represent Essex in the English Schools' Track and Field Championships.

Charlotte Malton, 14, from Chelmsford County High School for Girls, will take part in the high jump in the competition, which will be held in Gateshead this weekend.

Charlotte, a Year 10 student, jumped a personal best of 1.64 metres in the high jump at the Essex Schools' Track and Field Championships to become joint county champion in the inter-girls' competition.

Being selected to represent Essex is a great achievement as it is the strongest county in the country, having won the championships 14 times in the last 15 years.

Charlotte, who trains with Chelmsford Athletics Club twice a week said: “I am really excited and looking forward to competing in the national finals.

“I have put a of work in and have also worked with a physiotherapist to improve my strength. My aim is just to jump higher.”

Chelmsford County High School for Girls is delighted that its junior and intermediate athletics teams have again reached the National Finals of the School's Track and Field Cup.

The school is also grateful to Xchanging, Brooks Bros, Allied Irish Bank and Clubsports UK Ltd for sponsoring the girls' kits and providing transport.

And the girls won the Year 8, 10 and overall sections at the CESSSA Athletics Championships.
