"I felt we were at last slowly turning everything round and whilst the results over the season have not been up to expectations I genuinely believe we were at last on the right road," he said. "I knew it would be a long rebuilding job with the first team squad and for me it was a long term commitment and I felt we were getting there."
Statham, who says he still intends to stay in the game and has lost none of his enthusiasm, went on:
"I think defensively we have done that and had the Hadrian's Wall in place and the goals conceded reflects that.
"The biggest problem has been in attack and finding a pair of goalscorers who will regularly find the net and get you 35 goals a season between them.
"We had one in Billy Bricknell but he was out for eight weeks injured and others we had brought in didn't do the job required.
"Looking at results since I've been manager and its' clear for anyone to see that we were never that far away from other sides further up the league, never heavily defeated but drew games that we should have won,"
"I also think the Town fans should get behind the team more, whoever is playing, and not be as critical as they have been."
