ESSEX: No officers on leaked BNP list

Friday, November 21, 2008, 14:57

ESSEX Police have denied that any of their officers are members of the British National Party after a list of followers was leaked on the internet.

It is prohibited for any member of the police force to be part of the right-wing political party.

The names, addresses, telephone numbers and job descriptions of members had been published on the internet, but have since been removed after protests from those listed.

In a statement, an Essex Police spokesman said: "Membership of the BNP by any police officer is prohibited.

"Police staff are required to comply with the policies and procedures of Essex Police, which state that membership of the BNP is incompatible with being a member of Essex Police.

"There is no evidence that any member of Essex Police is a member of the BNP.

"Should there be any information to the contrary, then the matter would be investigated by our professional standards department."

Police officers have been banned from being members of the BNP since 2004.

Merseyside Police are currently investigating claims that one of their officers has been named on the list, which dates from 2007.
