Jimmy's rural pursuits

Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 08:42

ESSEX boy Jimmy Doherty returns to our screens tonight as he goes in search of Farming Heroes for a new BBC2 series.

Jimmy first came to our attention as struggled to set up and run a working farm on the Essex/Suffolk borders at Wherstead.

He'd given up a PhD to pursue his dream and all the ups and downs were shown in the popular BBC2 series Jimmy's Farm.

A childhood friend of Jamie Oliver's, Jimmy's love of the country was evident from the outset and now he's out to find out how other farmers are coping with the challenges of the 21st century.

His journey starts tonight on home turf in East Anglia “the bread basket of England” where the scale of farming is massive, with huge machines and mass production.

Like his chum Jamie, Jimmy makes us aware of the processes that go into bringing food to our plate and the six part series will provide a real insight into a modern farmer's life.

Jimmy Doherty's Farming Heroes is on BBC2, tonight at 9pm.
