Injury doubts for Town side

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 08:51

MALDON Town have two major injury doubts before they embark on the road to Wembley this Saturday when they go to near neighbours Witham Town for an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie.

Prolific striker Cody McDonald and defender Alan Sampson are both only rated with a 50-50 chance of playing according to manager Russell Tanner who is already without the experienced central defender Aidan Collins.

"We'll have a roll call tonight (Thursday) at training to see whether they can make it in time," explained Tanner.

"Aidan will be out for at least five weeks having suffered a dislocated shoulder and he visited the fractures clinic last week to get it sorted.

"He will be missed but we have to reshuffle the pack as we did on Monday in our 2-0 win at Great Wakering when Cody was forced to come off," he explained.

"The one plus point was that 18-year-old Dan Ayden came on in midfield and did really well for us and looked comfortable on the ball, his passing was good and we have great hopes for him."

Tanner is also keen to "put one over" his old manager (Tony Last) at Witham Town where he played before taking over at Maldon.

He said: "I know Tony will have them wound up for the game and despite them making a pointless start to their league season, the FA Cup is different and it won't be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination.

"We want to have a good cup run ourselves because it raises the profile of the club and gives the players a real boost too.''

There's also cash to be won with the winners of Saturday's tie picking up £1,500.

On last Saturday's 2-1 home Ryman League Division One North defeat to Ware, Tanner said: "I was bitterly disappointed particularly with the second half display when I knew that at 1-1 the next goal would be the winner - and that's how it turned out."

He went on: "On Monday I was looking for the right response from all the players against Great Wakering and I got it with a good performance and good win and now we can build on that."

He added: "It was better all round and we played better as a team."
