Writtle College, a partner of the University of Essex, are proud to be sponsoring the category of the Best School Food Initiative of this year's Essex Food and Drinks Awards 2009.

Locally produced food has been at the forefront of the news and there is more pressure for schools to adapt their menus and the food they offer to ensure they provide a healthy and balanced diet to children and teachers. It's not only the educational needs of the children that schools have to cater for, reinforcing the importance of well-being and nutrition. The category for Best School Initiative offers local schools the opportunity to engage with local food suppliers and gain a good understanding of where their food comes from.

Established in 1893, Writtle College has a respected reputation as one of the UK's leading land-based institutions, offering a range of full and part-time diplomas and vocational training, University of Essex Foundation and Honours degrees and Postgraduate programmes. Set in its own 220 hectare estate with landscaped gardens, the College facilities include a working animal unit, equine training and development centre and stud, working farm and sports fields.

Writtle College has diversified over the years and is no longer just an agricultural college. Subjects available include Business Management, Design, Horticulture, Floristry, Conservation, Environment, Equine, Animal, Sport, as well as Agriculture and the new Sustainable Food Management courses.
