Category: Baker of the Year
From the advent of the business, established in Essex in 1824 by brothers William and Henry, we are pleased in 2009 to be celebrating our 185th anniversary. Now in the hands of the fifth generation of the family, the mill continues to thrive as it has done on the existing site at Chelmer Mills in the centre of Chelmsford since 1899. Milling both flour and animal feed from the site, we continue to serve the local community as well as running Cash and Carry operations in both Chelmsford and Colchester.
The innovation made early in the administration of William and Henry, who took on the business at 17 years old, was the introduction of steam power. Moving to a process where a steady rate of production was consistently achieved changed dramatically the Millers trade. Previously they had been at the whim of wind and water, floods and gales brought problems, as did severe droughts and windless days. These young men who installed the first machinery on the far bank of the river opposite the watermill at Broomfield were indeed farsighted.
The family philosophy continues to be a major part in the business today with everyone involved playing a significant part in the delivery and consistency of our finest flours. Serving predominantly a customer base of family run independent bakeries and a few larger artisan bakeries we produce a wide variety of flours to suit every bakery occasion. Whilst the market place continues to be extremely competitive we believe the Marriage's superior quality flour supplied to these high street bakers ensures that the products baked freshly every day in their establishments offer the best available. With our new website
www.flour.co.uk Marriages continually look to offer support to their customers with recipe details, marketing support and a forum to share industry news.
Marriages are delighted to be involved in promoting the exceptional quality of food and drink produced in Essex and in particular sponsoring for the second time the
Essex Baker of the Year for 2009.
