STANSTED: £50,000 haul of heavy machinery found near airport
Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 15:13
Officers picked up a weak signal while patrolling along the A120 near to Stansted airport on Tuesday afternoon.
A special receiving unit fitted to their car indicated that stolen items were nearby and the force helicopter was scrambled to join the search.
The helicopter guided the ground teams to an open container close to the Bury Lodge Hotel at Stansted airport.
Inside were two road rollers that had been stolen from a site in Stevenage the previous day and a nine-ton dumper truck was also identified as having been stolen.
Insp Justin Smith said: "We know that around £1.7 million of plant was stolen in Essex last year and that we generally only ever recover five per cent of it because so much of it is exported within days of the theft, so this recovery was a real boost."
