Change of scenery for headmaster
Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 15:20
After spending 19 years at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford, 10 of them as head, Dr Michael Walker opted for a change of scenery and has taken up the post of headmaster at Felsted School.
"I am an Essex man born and bred," said the 52-year-old. "I was looking for a new challenge but I wanted to stay in this part of the world."
He fulfilled his first duty when the school's impressive set of GCSE results were released last month and is now gearing up for his first term at the boarding school, where fees are up to £22,400 per year.
He has moved into the headmaster's house with his wife Corinne and pet dogs. The couple are getting used to a change in lifestyle, and their role as what Dr Walker describes as "archetypal parents" in the community, not only the school.
"Felsted is a very interesting school because it is integrated with the village," said Dr Walker. "It is a beautiful village and a beautiful site and I really like the idea of being part of a wider community. There is a fantastic team here and I am looking forward to leading it."
