CHELMSFORD: King plays down "title decider"
Thursday, October 30, 2008, 08:00
The Clarets currently sit top of the Blue Square South, two points ahead of the second placed Dons but yesterday (Wednesday), City manager Jeff King declared "it's just another three points at stake."
Playing down fans' belief that this is a championship decider, King said: "It's not, because there's such a long way still to go this season and plenty more points on offer.
"We naturally want to win and get another three points – it's as simple as that and nothing more.
"But if it's a draw or whoever loses, it's not going to decide who wins the title. I'm sure it will a good, competitive game with a big crowd and our players will not need winding up."
He also refutes the view that with the new Dons still involved in the FA Cup it will deflect them from the importance of this top of the table clash.
"They won't be worrying about the cup because like us they will want to pick up three league points," he added. "They get this game over and then they will worry about their cup game."
On City's exciting 3-3 draw at home to Bishop's Stortford on Monday, King was full of praise for his battling players.
"To play with 10-men for so long and still get something out of the game was great and the players showed total conviction and commitment," King declared. "I think, had we carried on the way we started, until Steve Robinson was sent off we would have won comfortably."
King also thought the striker Robinson brought down in the City area (Danny Harris) was offside when he went through.
"Perhaps Steve should have let him go through, which is not a natural instinct, and let him score because with 11 players on the park and the way we were playing I'm sure we would still have won," he added.
Several City players suffered knocks in Monday's game, notably Ollie Berquez with a foot injury, but all are expected to be fit for Saturday although King obviously declined to reveal his starting line-up.
There's also encouraging news on full-back Ian Cousins' hamstring injury. He has recovered and could be involved, possibly on the bench, for this Saturday's match.
The redoubtable defender Steve Ward, who is suffering from a broken nose, was due to have a scan yesterday (Wednesday) to see the extent of the injury and, if the break is not as bad as first thought, he could be back in contention for next week.
With a crowd of over 2,000 expected, fans for Saturday's game will be segregated like last season, with the Wimbledon fans using the Athletics Club side of the ground and City fans the other side.
On Monday City will entertain Southend Manor in the Essex Senior Cup Third Round at Melbourne Stadium (kick-off 7.30pm).
