Vigilant door staff alert CCTV to car
Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 16:16
Door staff at Edwards bar raised the alarm after unsuccessfully trying to help the woman find a taxi home.
Nick Harmston, manager of Que Pasa and chairman of Publink, said: "The door staff at Edwards were trying to help her. She refused to get into a taxi because she wanted to get cash from Tesco.
"The door staff notified the CCTV controller that there was a vulnerable female who was very drunk and they monitored her."
Leaving the bar the woman headed back towards town, her movements tracked by CCTV operators.
"She walked up towards the Saracen's Head and went to the bank, then a car pulled up and she got in."
But the driver was not a taxi driver, as she thought, and instead of taking her home she was sexually assaulted.
Police were able to review the CCTV footage and get the registration number of the car. They tracked it to the home of Rami Kayyali and discovered the woman's handbag on the back seat.
On Friday 26-year-old Kayyali, of Shelley Road, Chelmsford, was jailed for six years having been found guilty of rape.
Mr Harmston said: "If it wasn't for the fact the CCTV people were following her, the police would not have got the registration number."
He explained that during the week door staff throughout the town assist drinkers in finding taxis to ensure their safety, a role that is taken over by volunteer street pastors at weekends.
