New figures from accountancy firm KPMG show 55 personal bankruptcies were recorded in Chelmsford for the third quarter of 2008, a six per cent rise from the same quarter last year.
Wider figures for the county reveal the number of personal bankruptcies in the Colchester district for the same period were 147, up 26 per cent from the same time last year.
The figures for the Southend area were 231, a rise of 20 per cent from last year. Personal bankruptcies are when people petition for their own bankruptcy as opposed to being forced into bankruptcy by a creditor.
