BRENTWOOD: Cinema plan vote anger
Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 08:00
Swan Paddock Residents Association (SPRA) members say Cllr Gordon MacLellan inappropriately "patronised and heckled" them while they campaigned against the development in Brentwood High Street on August 30.
Cllr MacLellan denies the accusations. Instead he claims he was asking what the group was saying to residents.
He said: "I don't feel I have fettered my position at all. I was trying to get clarification on what the campaign was about and I came away quite confused.
"It's difficult to see how you can fetter your position when you don't know what the final plans look like.
"They are campaigning on a false premise."
Jane Fleming-Wood, of Swan Paddocks, claims Cllr MacLellan attacked the group saying they were "trying to spoil it for the majority".
They have accused him of "clearly" expressing "strong predetermined views" in favour of the proposed plans for William Hunter Way.
This, they argue, has voided his right to vote on the planning application due to be discussed and voted on on December 10.
Elizabeth Guyatt, also of SPRA, said: "SPRA has always been in favour of bringing back a cinema to Brentwood, it is the size and scale of the development that we are objecting to.
"We are trying to protect Brentwood from excessive pollution and traffic, and from becoming yet another cloned high street."
Plans for the cinema, shopping complex, multi-storey car park and 14 new homes can be viewed online at www.brentwood. gov.uk
