Iron slip up to Thurrock
Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 13:55
Braintree went ahead through Ryan Moran on 32 minutes but the lead was cancelled out by a fine Leon McKenzie strike three minutes later.
The home side then squandered a few chances but Thurrock made the most of an extended period of possession when McKenzie scored again in the 52nd minute.
The result was not enough to lift Thurrock out of the relegation zone, while the Iron remain in 15th place.
It was a different story for Braintree on Saturday as they beat Newport County 3-2 at Cressing Road.
Braintree broke the deadlock when a long throw from Billy Burgess was nodded on at the near post by Sean Marks to Danny Hockton at the far post and the prolific striker headed the ball home.
Newport responded six minutes later. Breaking on the right, the ball was switched across the Iron defence for the incoming Justyn Roberts to tuck the ball past Craig Holloway in the home goal.
But back came Braintree and a minute before the interval, a corner was floated into the box and Billy Burgess stole in unmarked to head it into the net.
The visitors again responded quickly. A long drop kick from their goalkeeper evaded Braintree's defence and Craig Reid broke free before steering the ball home and making it 2-2 at the interval.
Iron dominated for lengthy periods after the break.
Micky Shinn saw his header well saved and then the 'keeper then had to react quickly to scoop away another header, this time from Lee Burns, off his goal line.
Braintree's persistence was rewarded on 78 minutes when shirt-pulling in the 18-yard box by Newport defender Paul Bignot was penalised by the referee and the match official awarded a penalty.
Danny Hockton saw his spot-kick slip wide of the upright, but he was soon to make amends.
A Newport goal-kick was headed back for the waiting Hockton to split the visitors' defence and then tuck the ball past the stranded keeper inside the far left upright.
Just as Iron fans were calling for time, a stunning save from Holloway secured the three points for Braintree. A free-kick from deep was lofted towards the home penalty area and Adie Harris saw his volley denied by a superb diving save from Holloway.
So three welcome points for Lee Patterson's side who are without a match this Saturday as their scheduled Blue Square South opponents, Havant & Waterlooville, are in FA Cup action.
