Iron players are warned

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 16:49

BRAINTREE Town manage Lee Patterson is personally not underestimating this Saturday's home FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round opponents Farnborough Town and the same message will be going out to his players at training tonight (Thursday).

"They're top of their league, obviously a good side to be there and will want to come to us as underdogs and turn us over," he explained. "So we will have to be ready from the off, fully prepared to cope with them and impose our game."

"It's a big game for us too and I want the same from the players as in last Saturday's second half performance at Basingstoke where we came back from two goals down to draw," Patterson said. "But Farnborough are riding high and top of their league, clearly full of confidence and will want to put one over us as we are at Conference level.

Meanwhile a much improved second half display from the Iron saw them retrieve a two-goal deficit at bottom club Basingtoke and return home with a Blue Square South point on Saturday.

It extended the side's recent improved form of four wins and three draws and keeps them closer to mid table security but they will need to start winning more games if they are to make the end of season play-offs.

At Basingstoke they conceded two goals just before the interval with Rob Watkins and Brentford loanee Ross Montague giving the home side the lead.

It was a different tale in the second half as the Iron stepped up a gear and on 66 minutes Bradley Quinton headed a neat goal and they then had two clearcut chances by Louis Riddle to equalise but he squandered both opportunities.

But seven minutes from time a mistake by home defender Joe Dolan allowed Riddle another chance and this time he took it, firing into the net from an acute angle.

It was no more than Braintree deserved just on their second half performance alone and although there were still late chances for either side to snatch a winner a draw was a fair result.

Patterson also praised the players for showing real character and determination in coming back from a two-goal deficit.

"They showed some real character and determination in pulling the game back to 2-2 in the second half and should have gone on to win," he said. "There were some pleasingly big individual performances out there on the day and having given away two rather unfortunate goals late on in the first half their response was excellent."

Patterson went on: "We were up against a side fighting for their lives down at the bottom and they made it hard for us.

"But every player responded well in the second half which was particularly pleasing," he continued. "Even before we equalised I felt we could go on and win but disappointing it was in one way as was only gained a point at least it showed something of the real characters of our players."

The Iron's Blue Square South match at Havant & Waterlooville, postponed because of the Hampshire club's FA Cup commitments, has been re-arranged for Monday, December 1, with kick-off at 7.45pm.
