BRAINTREE: Iron looking to avoid cup upset
Thursday, September 25, 2008, 08:00
That's the candid view of manager Lee Patterson, heartened by his side's 2-0 league win over Bromley on Saturday.
Patterson wants to see his players take the game to the home side and impose their authority on Ryman League Division One South team, who are two divisions below the Iron but have been in fine form so far this season.
"Kingstonian are top of their division, unbeaten and obviously full of confidence and probably have seen where we are in our league and think they can beat us," Patterson said. "But our players will need to be professional, play at a high tempo and with our passing game ensure we take control.
"We want to progress into the next round and have a cup run because it's good for the club, gives players confidence and now there is good prize money on offer that increases with every round,"
The Iron's only fresh worry on the injury front is Lee Burns, who was suffering from a bug earlier this week but is expected to be fit as will Micky Shinn but Billy Burgess is still suspended.
Ryan Moran, Mark Jones and Angus Stevland are still out injured but Patterson is confident his side will be on their mettle on the day adding: "We want to be in that hat for the next round draw."
Patterson went to see Kingstonian play on Monday and says he has a fair idea of how they play.
He revealed: "I spotted one or two areas which I think we can exploit to our benefit."
The win over Bromley was also vital, he said, bearing in mind it was to follow a two week gap in league activity.
Patterson said: "We needed the win and we needed to keep a clean sheet and I think the players did exceptionally well on Saturday.
"Yes we had six or seven clear chances to have won by a bigger margin but we won comfortably and picked up three points which was crucial.
"We did really well in the first half and yes they came at us for the first 10 minutes of the second half when we sat back too much.
"But once they had a player sent off I felt we were well in control and never in danger of conceding late goals which is what we have done in some games this season.
"Gareth Williams took both his goals well and I think all the players now have a better understanding amongst themselves and it's starting to look good for us."
