Consistency is key

Wednesday, November 05, 2008, 10:13

COMPLACENCY when playing against inferior opposition has cost Braintree Town dear this season with some poor results but manager Lee Patterson is confident his players have learned their lesson.

Patterson said: "It nearly costs us another three points on Saturday at Bognor Regis on Saturday but thankfully we spoke about it at half-time and sorted it and I think the players have now got the message.

"It doesn't matter who you are playing, you have to start in the right frame of mind from the first whistle.

"We've tried to instil this in the players' minds because they have be on their game from the start whoever you are playing."

Patterson, who expects to have long term injured Andy Porter back in contention next week, is looking for his players to respond in the right way to some new training methods by winning their next two Blue Square South games.

"We're at home to Weston-Super-Mare this Saturday and the following Saturday go to Basingtsoke Town and they have to be winnable games," he declared.

"We want six points and that will keep us pushing up towards the play-off spot and we're just 11 points off at present."

The Iron have made it to the play-offs for the past two season and despite an erratic start to the current league campaign - they have lost seven games so far - Patterson is confident they can make it a hat-trick.

"We've now the players and quality in the side so long as that complacency against lower sides doesn't return.

"If we can be more consistent and put a good run together there's time for us to make up lost ground."

Patterson, who confirmed that he's still trying to bring in another defender on loan as back-up in the defence, is also relishing the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy later this month when the Iron host Farnborough Town.

Farnborough are currently third in the British Gas Business League Premier Division, and Patterson admitted: "It will be a tough game no doubt but we do have home advantage and I'm looking forward to it because cup games are always a bit special.''

An impressive second half display in contrast to a disappointing first 45 minutes, saw Braintree score twice without conceding a goal in rain sodden conditions at Bognor Regis Town's Nyewood Road ground on Saturday and put the Iron back on winning ways.

It was three much needed points for Patterson's side and crucially moves them up closer to the chasing play-off pack in the Blue Square South.

At times both sides struggled to cope with the worsening conditions and Iron went close to scoring in the first half when Danny Hockton's fierce show came back off the angle of the post and crossbar on the half hour.

Iron found the net on 55 minutes when Gareth Williams showed his class by denying the home defenders and driving the ball low into the net from 18 yards.

It was the confidence booster the visitors needed and they moved forward looking far more menacing than earlier in the game.

Although the home side had one clear-cut chance to equalise when Reg Savage screwed his effort wide of the target, the longer the game went on the more likelihood the points seemed destined to be Braintree's.

With just 22 minutes of the game to go, Braintree's dependable Iron full-back Billy Burgess moved up into attack and in typical fashion he hooked the ball home from close range.

It was the breathing space the Iron needed and they ran out the rest of the game without any problems from a demoralised home side.
