BRAINTREE: Iron on a good league run

Thursday, October 09, 2008, 08:00

BRAINTREE Town pulled off their best win of their Blue Square South season on Saturday when they toppled leaders Hayes & Yeading United 1-0 but manager Lee Patterson admits it was not one of their better games.

"We've played better and lost this season so I'm not complaining as that makes it three successive league games undefeated," said Patterson yesterday (Wednesday).

"But full marks to all the players because they were excellent on the day, their work ethic was up and they were determined from start to finish to win and collect the three points.

"I could see at the end what winning that game meant to them.

"When you go to the league leader's home ground and restrict them to just one shot on target all afternoon and come away with a deserved win then you know the players have done their business."

The Iron, without a first team game this Saturday, having been knocked out of the FA Cup, now have a few days' breathing space to get as many of their players over what Patterson calls "niggling little injuries" before they take on Newport County at home on Saturday week.

"We have a home reserve game against Haverhill this Saturday and some first team players on their way back from injury and those who need matches will play, such as Mark Jones, Micky Shinn, Adrian Deanes," Patterson explained.

"Hopefully players like Andy Porter, Louis Riddle and Ryan Moran who also have those niggling injuries will now have time to recover properly.

"We know there are no easy games at this level of football but if we can get all or most of the players back from injuries we currently have a settled squad and we can move on with confidence," he said. "If you look at the league table we are only 12 points off a play-off place so we need now to put a little run together to keep moving up the table."

On Monday's disappointing 3-1 Setanta Shield Second Round defeat at Chelmsford City, Patterson said: "I put my hand up and take the rap for that because we started with a different formation to what the players are normally used to.

"I changed it from our normal set up to combat the way I knew City would play like the last time we played them there and drew but it didn't work out," he admitted. "We went back to our normal 4-4-2 after half-time which was much better but by then you are behind and chasing the game."

Patterson said he felt they could have pulled a goal back in the first 15 minutes of the second half and they had the chances which could have seen a different outcome.

He added: "We did pull one back late on which was encouraging but of course it was too late then to try and salvage the competition for us."
