Three projects in the Braintree area have been awarded grants totalling £400,000 from the 2012 Legacy Fund – established by Essex County Council to ensure our young athletes reach their goals.
Braintree BMX club will be using their £50,000 share to resurface their track bringing it up to national competition standard.
Chairman Richard Watts said: "We already host regional meets but we have riders who compete at a higher standard.
"They travel around the country from Lancashire to Cornwall during the summer months competing in national events.
"Our ultimate goal was to hold that sort of meeting in Braintree, we hope people will travel to us instead."
Mr Watts was over the moon with the grant, which was applied for by Carol Redgewell, the mother of rider Shane Redgewell.
This year the club marked their 25th anniversary of hosting regional events and they are also celebrating news that plans to relocate them have been shelved by Braintree District Council.
Hedingham School, in Yeldham Road, Sible Hedingham, was awarded £125,000 to spend on their artificial sports pitch and Great Notley Country Park received £225,000 for a similar project.
The chosen schemes had to meet certain criteria to be eligible for funding: they had to be under development but lacking partnership funding and applicants had to make a commitment to start building work in spring 2009.
Other partners, attracted by the council's commitment, have already stumped up £8million in match funding.
Cllr Stephen Castle, responsible for the 2012 Games at Essex County Council, said: "We are serious about supporting young people in Essex to achieve their sporting potential at all levels and I feel very proud that as part of our 2012 legacy we are able to invest in better sporting facilities."
