RIVENHALL: Demand for waste plant inquiry

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 15:28

A CALL for a public inquiry into controversial plans for a regional waste plant on the old Rivenhall Airfield has been made by Braintree district councillors.

The plea was put forward by the Witham local committee as part of a catalogue of objections to the proposal by Gent Fairhead, which could involve 404 lorry movements each day to keep the waste facility running.

Cllr James Abbott said: "We desperately need a public inquiry to see if it's safe for us to breathe in these pollutants."

He said the project had grown four times since it was first conceived, and added: "Ninety-five per cent of waste would come from outside the Braintree district."

He said the plant would operate 24 hours a day, include an incinerator and would be "producing large amounts of carbon dioxide".

The committee backed officers' recommendations that the planning application should be opposed.

A report said that there was no justification for the regional paper pulping facility that is proposed and that it would introduce an industrial activity into a countryside location .

Councillors voted 8-3 in favour of Cllr Abbott's amendments.

He raised fears over pollution and that the chimney of the facility was likely to be more than 35 metres high and a "visual intrusion into the landscape".

The decision was greeted with applause from a small group of people in the public gallery.

The application will now be considered by the district council planning committee, which will make a recommendation to county planners who will have the final say.

Cllr Robert Mitchell said: "I am deeply concerned that this site is too big. I am also extremely concerned about the height of the chimney."

The site will cover more than 50 acres. Reports indicated that up to 853,500 tonnes of household waste a year could be transported on to the site.

Cllr John Elliott said that extra traffic would more pressure on the already congested Bradwell village.
