Billericay Town in search for new midfielder

Wednesday, September 03, 2008, 08:00

BILLERICAY Town are desperately searching for a ball playing midfielder who will help them unlock visiting defences and create more goal scoring chances.

Joint manager Jason Broom, facing an increasing injury list of first team players with full-back Wayne Semanshia the latest addition with a pulled hamstring putting him out for three weeks, believes the midfield is the side's current main problem.

"It's lacking that ball playing player in there which is making it hard for us," he said.

"Full marks to the players who are covering these and others playing in unfamiliar positions because they doing a job because of the number of injuries we have at present."

Midfielder Jamie Dormer is still at least three weeks away from returning and so is long term injured Matt Game but when fully fit they would probably be automatic choices in the middle of the park.

"We are looking around to see if we could bring somebody is but it's difficult to find the right player - anyone available now so early in the season of course begs the question as to why they are available?" asked Broom.

"If we could unearth a little gem, like we did last season with Billy Bricknell, then that would great and go a long way to solving the immediate problem."

Broom and his joint managerial partner Grant Gordon, know that the side is good going forward with options readily available although defensively again the injury jinx continues to strike with both centre-halves - Steve Heffer and Tim Cole - still out.

"Hopefully Steve will be fit enough to resume in time for Saturday's home Ryman League Premier Division match against Harrow Borough but we shall have to see," said Broom.

"I know it's frustrating for supporters too but it's a question of patience and we have to stick to the budget we have and to bring any player in would mean moving someone out."

Last night (Tuesday) the Blues were away at Hendon for a Ryman League Premier Division match and Broom was hoping to at least picked up a point there and then three points when bottom of the table Harrow Borough visit New Lodge this Saturday.

"I'm really expecting us to collect six points from the two games although four would be not too displeasing," he explained.

"What with the injuries we've had to put up with and new players still trying to gel in plus players being asked to play out of position, I think we're doing quite well for starters under our present circumstances."

The Town have taken seven points from their first five games up until last night and sit comfortably in 13th position.

Broom added: "Everyone knows there's a long way to go and yes I know we can do better and I'm confident we will when some of the injured players return."

On Saturday's 2-2 draw with Carshalton Athletic Broom said: "They're a good side and we worked hard and I think a draw was probably a fair result overall.

''But again had we had a ball player in midfield we could have unlocked them more and caused more problems.

"We were good in parts but gave away two sloppy goals but then we still have chances up at the other end to have won the game," he added.

"I believe we will continue to improve as a team once the injured players become available for selection."
