Billericay Town boss disappointed by opening day defeat

DISAPPOINTED Billericay Town joint manager Jason Broom was left frustrated by his team's opening day Ryman League Premier Division defeat at Staines Town.
The Blues went down to a questionable first-half penalty against last season beaten play-off finalists but Broom was angry way his team started the match.
"It's always going to be a difficult place to go," Broom told the Gazette before last night's (Tuesday) scheduled home game against Tooting & Mitcham. "But you've got to give yourselves a chance.
"We started ever so badly and we gave them the edge in the first 20 minutes. After that we seemed to settle down and I think 0-0 would have been a fair result but we've got to start better.
"There were a few a harsh words said at half-time. I told them in no uncertain terms that we can't pick and choose when we start to play our football."
The penalty came in the 18th minute after the ball struck a hand in the Billericay box. Staines' Dave Sargent converted from the spot but Broom was unsure about the decision.
"It was contentious," he explained. "It was one of those where the ball was blasted against a hand. At the weekend I saw similar thing in the Chelsea game and it was given but it also happened in the Manchester United game and that wasn't given."
After last night's scheduled match against Tooting & Mitcham, Town face a Bank Holiday weekend double header with a home match against Wealdstone on Saturday followed by the first Essex derby of the season against newly promoted Canvey Island.
Last season's trip to Wealdstone in late November was Broom and joint manager Grant Gordon's first game in charge after previous boss Matt Jones was sacked.
Broom said: "They are a big, physical side and it will be a tough game but if we apply ourselves properly then that shouldn't be a problem. I believe we have the players to be able to beat anyone in this division.
"And now that Chelmsford City have gone, Canvey will be the main derby for Billericay. Derbies are great games and we've got AFC Hornchurch and Heybridge Swifts to play as well.
"Both teams on Monday will be wanting to get the bragging rights for the supporters but you can only get three points for derbies. You don't get double for a derby win. It may take some time for your players to get used to each other but come that first win and their confidence will grow."
