Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 11:06
Leslie Clements, from Tyrrells Road in Billericay, pleaded guilty at Basildon magistrates' court to falsely claiming council tax benefit.
The 57-year-old failed to tell Basildon council that his wife received an occupational pension.
Clements committed the offence between April 2001 and March 2008.
He was fined £67 and ordered to pay £250 costs, and £3,200 in benefits.
Cllr Phil Turner, Basildon council's cabinet member for resources, said: "We will always prosecute benefit cheats and recover from them every penny they stole.
"Benefits are there to help people who genuinely need them and we take any abuse of the system extremely seriously.
"The council has a dedicated team of counter fraud officers working round the clock to track down benefit cheats.
"We respond to fraudulent claims as soon as they are detected, and will be recovering the money owed to us as quickly as possible."
