Two suspects approached the man from behind who was walking in Sparrows Herne, Basildon, at around 6.35pm.
They pushed him into a front garden and then pulled out what is thought to be a knife and demanded he handed over his personal items.
The victim managed to escape to safety unharmed.
Earlier that day, November 17, police received a call at 2.10pm that two suspect males were walking along Wynters, Basildon, carrying large knives and chopping away at bushes as they walked passed.
At 6.30pm, police received another call that two suspect males, matching the same descriptions in all three incidents, were walking along Latches Shaw, with one in a grey hoodie carrying an iron bar. Latches Shaw is a neighbouring road to the attempted robbery location, which happened only moments after this sighting.
Area Insp Simon Anslow wants the public's help in identifying and catching the suspects.
He said: "We believe that all three of these incidents are connected due to the descriptions matching, and the timescale between the last two.
"We have continued to experience a low number of robberies in Basildon and Laindon, but one incident like this is one too many.
" It must have been a terrible ordeal for the victim, who thankfully escaped any physical injury."
Suspect one is described as white, male, 17 to 19 years-old, of average build, wearing a dark grey hoodie with Nike across the front, with a white T-shirt underneath.
He was also wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a woolly beanie hat.
Suspect two was also white, about 5ft 10ins, slim and wearing a dark-coloured hoodie.
