THESE two youngsters are getting their kicks of out karate after being crowned top of the chops at a national competition.

Bethany West, 17, and Bryce Luke, 14, both claimed gold medals in their individual events, while Bethany scooped a second first place in the team category at the English Kyu Grade National Championships held in Sheffield last week.

The Brentwood School pupils were delighted with their efforts, Bethany, who won the senior female kata, said: "I was quite nervous in the final because I went second and the girl before me was really good.

"I was surprised and happy when I won."

Bryce, who has recently been selected for the England squad, said: "It's never easy in a competition like this but it wasn't too hard as I'd considered moving up a weight.

"I've won a few bronze medals before so to get a gold was great."
