2 If you’re a beer lover get over to the Maldon Beer Festival at the Town Hall on Market Hill. It features dozens of ales and ciders from around the UK and runs until Saturday night when there’ll be live music from local band, The Mighty Boss Cats.
3 Star of Have I Got News For You, Paul Merton, is returning to his comedy roots by doing his first stand-up tour this century, calling into the Cliffs Pavilion, on Friday. He’s promising a night of sketches, music, magic, variety and dancing girls (two of whom aren’t actually girls) with his Out Of My Head show.

5 Essex’s ukulele collective D’Ukes are proving one of the most popular bands in the county and they’re bringing their set of eclectic covers to the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch foyer on Sunday evening; expect anything from Johnny Cash to Radiohead.
6 Yes, it’s a film based on a board game. Battleship (12A) is out at cinemas now and manages to muster more than two hours of action out of what happens when aliens try to join in the US Navy’s war games off the Hawaiian coast. Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch and Rhianna star.
7 There’s a Food Frenzy at Hylands
House, Chelmsford on Sunday when there’s a sushi workshop from 2pm with Yuka Poulten who’ll be demonstrating how you can make all types of traditional Japanese sushi. Booking is essential.
8 Former Generation Game presenter Isla St Clair returns to Chelmsford on Saturday with her Eyes Front show at the Cramphorn Theater which will be an afternoon of music, film and nostalgia from the war years. The show starts at 2.30pm.
9 Abigail’s Party, Mike Leigh’s study of ambition and discontent in the suburbs come to the Brentwood Theatre this Saturday and Sunday. This classic 1970s play is as resonant now as it was back then as we see how fragile people’s lives can be under the surface.
10 Round off your weekend with the European Union Chamber Orchestra at the Civic Theatre on Sunday. The orchestra features musicians from each member state of the EU and will feature harpist Catrin Finch and flautist Fiona Slominska for this programme of music by Handel, Mozart, Debussy and Haydn.
