The Tyler family released a statement that read: "Maureen Tyler was a much-loved member of her family. She was born in London and lived most of her life in the Billericay area.

"Though now retired, she had various jobs during her working life including working in the local village shop at Crays Hill."

Ms Tyler had two sons with her partner Michael, who died in 2011. She also has an older daughter who lives abroad.

The statement continued: "She was a loving, caring person who always saw the best in people. She cared deeply about the family and was well respected in her local community and at her local church.

"Mark was a loving brother and father, who will be sorely missed."

They added: "What happened is a double tragedy. The loss of both Maureen and Mark will affect everyone's lives."

Police are treating Ms Tyler's death as murder and that of her son, who lived in Carlisle Way, Pitsea, as non-suspicious.

It is believed that Mr Tyler shot his mother before turning the gun on himself. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Postmortem examinations showed that both died from gunshot wounds.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances around the deaths.

Senior investigating officer DCI Lucy Robinson said: "It is still unclear as to when Maureen and Mark Tyler died. Inquiries are ongoing in order to ascertain the sequence of events which led to their respective deaths.

"We're looking to speak with anyone who has been along Pitsea View Road, Gardiners Lane North or the surrounding area since the end of August or the first week of September."

She added: "We would appreciate the public's help in building a picture of their movements prior to their deaths, so anyone who spoke to them or saw them is asked to contact detectives at Brentwood SCT on 101 or e-mail SCDAppeals@essex.pnn.police.uk."
