"But it's not over – we will have several nightmares yet."

Paul and his colleague, Lynn Ager, have worked hard through the poor weather to ensure the plants will look their best.

"Over the winter we have had little light so we have had to use flood lights and we've had a disastrous April so we have been forcing it in the tunnel, like a greenhouse."

To enhance the display the F1 Williams team has agreed to supply some real car parts, and a mock up of Williams racer Bruno Senna will be in the driving seat.

The aim of the display, which will be on show between May 22 and 26, is to tell the story of the Williams team throughout its 35-year history, while displaying the skill and artistry that can be achieved through horticulture.

A 15-metre long canvas will also illustrate the timeline of Williams' cars since 1977 and Weeping Japanese Maples will be used as the wheels to give the effect that they are growing.

"The team is a green team and they want to put the message out there," said Paul.

He added: "Apart from my family, I have two other loves: horticulture and motor racing.

"Although other teams showed interest, I've been a Williams fan since the Alan Jones years right through to this season and like many other UK fans, Sir Frank Williams represents everything that I admire in British motor racing."

The display will be shown on stand number GP1 in the Great Pavilion for the duration of the event.
