Plans afoot to mark the Games throughout town
THE Billericay Youth Town Forum is leading the way for a one-day event to mark the Olympic Games.
Billericay youth councillors have been liaising with their colleagues on the town council about the possibility of hosting an event in Lake Meadows Park in the summer.
At a town council meeting on Thursday, councillors suggested July 21 as a possible date to stage an event.
The celebration would be similar to the opening ceremony of the restored skate park in July, which involved the park cafe and young residents.
Town council vice chairman Councillor David Knight, said: "The idea is we will hold it somewhere in the summer with the emphasis being the Billericay celebration of the Olympics."
Another Olympic idea discussed by councillors last week was the hanging of banners and flags on lampposts in the High Street.
Basildon Borough Council is prepared to shell out £5,374 on the decorations in Billericay and is asking the town council to contribute half the cash.
Town councillors noted that baskets are hung from most lampposts in the summer and suggested that banners could be hung on alternate lampposts with any excess decorations being used to line Radford Way towards the railway station and Lake Meadows Park.
The council's environment committee will make a recommendation on the proposal at its next meeting later this month.
