A MUM-OF-THREE who refused to pay an £815 fine for littering has single-handedly battled the council in court – and won.

Laura Pritchard, 24, of Humber Road, Witham, was hit with a fixed penalty notice for leaving a bin bag in an alley behind her home which council spies said contained household waste.

But Laura, who represented herself in front of Judge Christopher Ball QC, two justices and members of Braintree District Council at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, convinced the court it was a bag full of Betterware catalogues, for whom she works, which she had simply left out for her boss to pick up.

After winning Laura told the Chronicle: "I'm over the moon! All I would like now is an apology from the council as I'm sure a lot of people feel that we are tramps."

Her partner Adam added: "I just feel like we got to the bottom of it.

"Either way, they'd never have got a penny off us. As I've said before, I'd have preferred to go to jail than pay them anything."

Laura and Adam received a £75 fine in October last year, but when they did not pay they were summonsed to court and the fine soared.

Laura said: "I didn't pay because I felt that I had been victimised."
