Maldon Primary School looking back over 100 years of local history

A TOWN school is celebrating its 100th birthday.

Maldon Primary School, on Wantz Chase, is marking its centenary with a number of special events, including a whole-school street party and kite-flying day.

And the school, which is one of the oldest in the town, is asking former pupils to share their memories of their time there.

Leila Dickson, aged nine, said: "My granddad George went to this school and we've had so many fun things organised to celebrate turning 100.

"We've been making kites to fly, and one girl made hers the wrong way round so it wouldn't fly, which was quite funny."

"We've also found a logbook from the school in the 1920s," added Faith Eldred-Butler, also nine. "It was like a diary about what school life was like back then. One of the interesting things was that the school had to be closed because there was an outbreak of chickenpox and scarlet fever."

The school's celebrations will culminate with a trip to Mangapps Farm museum near Burnham on June 12.

"A hundred years ago the school closed so the children could go and help pick the pea crop," continued Faith.

Ben Noughton, aged eight, added: "We're going down to the farm to interview people picking the peas now."

Eva Mulville, nine, said: "In the 20s students we were allowed to have the day off if the circus came to town, things were very different to how they are now at school."

The school is hoping to create a time tunnel display with memories from past and present pupils.

Head teacher Tracey Thornton said: "We are having a fabulous time celebrating our 100th birthday with all sorts of exciting events and activities."
