AN HISTORIC and unique building in the Dengie will be taken off the market tomorrow (Friday) and then go to the highest bidder.

The Latchingdon Water Tower was placed on the property market in April and has grabbed the attention of dozens of interested buyers.

With a guide price of £250,000, the tower on the Lower Burnham Road has planning permission to be renovated into a four bedroom home.

Martin Young, of Strutt and Parker estate agents told the Chronicle: "It's definitely one of the most unusual buildings I've ever been given the task to sell but I have had over 40 interested buyers in touch.

"A lot of them come from the local area up to Maldon but we will see on Friday who is seriously interested in buying the Water Tower and who was just curious about the property on their doorstep.

"The family that currently own it live in Halstead and got all the planning permission needed to renovate the place but could not carry on with the work, realising that it was too much for them."

The structure was originally built to store water for the nearby villages and measures nine by 14 metres high. It used to hold 38,700 gallons of water.

Planning permission has been granted for four bedrooms, a study area and a family bathroom in the main drum and a staircase to be built leading up to an upper story for a living area and balcony.

"There are incredible views," said Mr Young. "You can see as far as Kent and over to Southend."
