Head to the Village Green
THIS year's Village Green festival at Chalkwell Park, Southend takes place this Saturday, June 30 and promises a diverse and exciting line-up of music, comedy, poetry, DJs, theatre and all sorts of other entertainment, all of which is free.
The fun starts at 11am and the main stage features a fantastic range of bands from local breakthrough group Under The Ice to established names like headliner Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Jake Shillingford (My Life Story) and Wilko Johnson. Other acts include The Correspondents, Little Dog and Canvey Island Allstars which features a kind of supergroup formed by members of Eddie and the Hotrods, The Damned, The Charlatans, The Mission and Dean Kennedy, Dr Feelgood's manager, on vocals.
On the Sundown Stage, there'll be spoken word, poetry and singer-songwriters including wonderful wordsmith John Hegley and local heroes, The Lucky Strikes.
Jo Overfield, of Sundown Poets, who are curating the stage said: "We can't wait to be involved with the Village Green again this year, especially running and programming our own stage, it's going to be a superb line-up.

Elsewhere at Village Green there's there's Park View which features some of the best Southend music acts during the day before turning into a comedy stage at night with Markus Birdman, The Boy With Tape On His Face and Duncan Oakley all set to crack the funnies.
The daytime Tea Dance Stage is hosted by renowned Latin percussionist Snowboy who has put together an eclectic collection of performers, DJs and dance acts guaranteed to get you moving with a headline set from The Shirt Tail Stompers, perfect for doing the lindy hop to.
After that the stage becomes a cabaret with Reuben Dotdotdot, LIsa Lottie and Lili La Scala.
The theatre/dance stage will feature performances from the Royal Opera House, the Southend Shakespeare Company and other local groups.
The Global Village Stage will host a cultural pot pouri of performers including an acoustic campfire session in the afternoon and performers from around the world in the evening.
Finally, the Cafe Valise stage is where festival-goers can find food and drink while being entertained.
