BRENTWOOD: Five gipsy sites given go-ahead
FIVE permanent traveller sites will be built in Brentwood.
The decision comes after months of consultation and has been met with both desperation and delight.
More than 2,300 comments were received from residents and organisations on 18 different sites proposed last year.
Now, after analysing the results, a total of 15 permanent pitches, demanded by the Government to meet the needs of gipsies and travellers, will be situated at Cottage Garden in Beads Hall Lane, Pilgrims Hatch; Willow Park in Stock Lane, Ingatestone; Roman Triangle in Mountnessing; Hope Farm in Horsemanside and Goatswood Lane in Navestock; and Treetops in Curtis Mill Lane, Navestock.
It means dozens of families living in illegally-built homes already on the sites can stay without the threat of eviction.
Brentwood Borough Council says the decision was made reluctantly.
Council leader Cllr Brandon Lewis said: "Whether we agree personally or not, it is in the best interest of the borough to accept 15 additional authorised permanent residential pitches be provided by 2011, as instructed by central Government.
"In doing so, it is preferable to consider the existing sites with temporary permission or existing unauthorised sites to avoid creating even more sites than we already have.
"Purely on balance this seems to be the best thing to do in a bad situation."
Prof Thomas Acton, secretary of the Brentwood Gypsy Support Group, said: "We are delighted. We are very pleased and grateful that the council has shown some courage in doing the best and recognising what has to be done."
He added: "You can't legislate people away. The only way to stop illegal sites is provide somewhere for them to go."

“Shame on the weakly, cowardly, limp-wristed Conservative-run Brentwood
B C for capitulating to the Travellers without so much as a fight. Little wonder then that Brandon Lewis did a runner up the A12 to Great Yarmouth. Chicken !
There was a time (a long time ago mind) when the Tories had balls (in the days of Maggie Thatcher) and would have fought this rotten, corrupt, bankrupt Labour government. Not now however. Surrender is the order of the day for the Tories - what a sorry bunch of losers they have become.
Note also this - that local self -styled Gypsy/Traveller supremo, Prof Thomas Acton, is equally to blame for encouraging Travellers to break planning laws with impunity and be rewarded by the government and council for doing so. Acton and his leftist activists have much to answer for. I note none of the Traveller sites is anywhere near Prof Acton's Warley residence nor his church, the Baptist chapel in King's Road. You lousy, stainking socialist hypocrites !
So, when you go to vote at the ballots this May, for local, County and Euro elections, think about how the Tories have betrayed us on this issue; how Labour have created this problem in the first place, strongly supported by the paethetic Lib Dems. Does not leave much choice really does it ? All of the big 3 parties are as weak, useless and pathetic as each other.”

“Alan, you could not have explained it better, why tar everyone with the same brush, and yes, they do feel safer amongst their families, because their parents and granparents had it hard whilst travelling, so yes they do need to settle down. As i stated good and bad in everyone. I might just like to add, the land was purchased for quite a substantial sum, and they could have purchased properties, but as you mention Alan, safety in numbers, yes we are lucky to have good families at The Triangle, and I do agree there are others that nobody would want for neighbours, but I am just supporting Alan,s saying Do not tar them all with the same brush. The children went through bullying at school to start with, totally uncalled for, so let them be, they claim nothing for nothing, and work to pay for what they own. Thanks for that bit of support Alan.”

“It may seem baffling but
here is a possible explanantion:
Bearing in mind what Jackie has so eloquently and succinctly outlined, these types of travellers would like to settle down to a stable way of life, and who could blame them for that?
Maybe they don't feel confident enough, after generations, to be split from the friends and families with whom they feel most secure. That is absolutely understandable.
No doubt many of us have been taken to the cleaners by some elements from the travelling community from elsewhere, as I have myself, but as Jackie says, that is absolutely no reason to tar everyone with the same brush.
Perhaps we should all have a rethink instead of pulling on our jackboots in order to give them a kicking.

“"Why exactly are they called travellers if they insist on staying? Isn't that a bit of a contradiction?..." That has been my question Clare as I have followed these stories in your press, as I try to understand what is going on here. These dwellings are admittedly "illegally-built" yet the British taxpayer must pay millions to removed-while also paying for relocation sites? I admit that I may not have the whole picture, but I am totally baffled”

“I find many comments lacking in intelligence, due to the fact that ,if some did their homework, they would know that the families of Roman Triangle have paid FIVE lots of council tax since their arrival, have been involved in school and local activities, much to the appreciation of their neighbours. Also guess what!, we didn,t supply the locksmiths with any extra work!, as we didn,t need to, I remember when they arrived, paying council tax, and all working for themselves, Brentwood Council mowed the grass along Roman Rd, and (I would like to know the reason), they left the stretch of grass outside Roman Triangle, even though it was council responsibility!, but a local took his mower up, and made it look good for them. They had no electricity for ages, even when the babies were ill, they asked for nothing, that they were nort willing to pay for. As for TAX PAYERS, does nobody realise, there are good and bad in all walks of life, read the papers thoroughly, instead of just the traveller,s bits! The families on Roman Triangle are HUMANS, who look after the kids, keep the place clean, and if you care to put yourself out, to visit, and i am sure you,d be welcome, you would see, their homes are much cleaner than some council residents! I, along with most of the residents are pleased they can stay, after a long hard worrying time, good luck to them and their families, God knows, they needed it, with all the abusive messages about them.”

“Why do these people think they have a right to site caravans where they want and live in them whilst a lot of them are ripping people off with dodgy tarmac or stealing trailers and quad bikes, they should be sent with their caravans to Ethiopia where there is no problem siting their caravan, only trouble is there is not much to nick out there.”

“We have had the government push this country in to recession which has led to a significant drop in our house prices, not satisfied with that they want to push our house prices down even further by inviting a bunch of free loaders sorry that should read travellers into our town.
On the plus side at least the lock smiths\DIY shops will do a great trade on padlocks, saving a few businesses from the grip of the recession.”

“OK Clare you win, I've pinched an old Transit pick-up( no tax or MOT of course), I'll break into the local school and pinch a hand bell. I will be well set up with my brand new shiny caravan. Lets find a nice secluded spot and get pally with Prof Thomas Acton, he is obviously very gullible and will fall for the old sob story. I just feel sorry for my new neighbours! Any old iron?”

“For those who oppose this decision, don¿t give up.
Each proposed site will have to be subjected to the full planning process ¿ application, consideration, council decision and possible appeal.Use every democratic right you have and don¿t let anyone off the hook.
Each proposed site will have to be the subject of a sustainability appraisal and conform to the governments guidelines - make sure they do.
Do not let your council persuade you that the government has issued any ¿instruction¿ ¿ it has not. No decision on the distribution of additional sites will be made until towards the end of this year .
The whole issue of further sites in the East of England has still to go through a further 8 week public consultation period, the start date for which has not yet been announced When it is, make sure you have your say .”
