SCHOOLCHILDREN and community members mucked in to tidy up a Chelmsford allotment site.

The “friends' working day” was organised by the Wilderness Foundation UK, a charity which has taken responsibility for running the Hobarts Close site in Melbourne.

Spokesman for the foundation Richard Corby said: “We are running eight allotment sites for the community.

“There are a lot of new people moving onto the estate and this is a way for them to get to know new people.

“Some people might like the idea of growing their own food but not want to take on the responsibility of running a whole allotment, and this is a good way for them to get involved.”

The project is being run in partnership with Moulsham High School.
