PERFECT BACKDROP: Councillor Michael White, the leader of Havering Council, proudly gestures towards the huge Union Flag on Tollgate House, which faces Romford Market

Tollgate House, which faces onto the ancient market, has been covered up with the patriotic disguise of a two-storey high Union Flag.

The enormous banner, which measures 22 metres from end to end and 11 metres high, will fly proudly in the heart of Romford throughout the Jubilee celebrations next month, which will mark 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

It will stay in place throughout the summer, providing a backdrop not only for the Diamond Jubilee, but also for the London Olympics which begin in July.

The Olympic Torch relay, which began its route in Land's End in Cornwall last week, will pass through Romford Market en route to its final destination at the Olympic Park in Stratford.

The leader of Havering Borough Council, Councillor Michael White, said: "I can't think of a more fitting decoration for Havering to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

"We have a wide range of events planned for the Market Place and Romfest should be a great show."

He added: "The flag is the perfect backdrop."

Romford Market has a history which goes back further than the 60 years.

In 1952 when the Queen ascended to the throne, the market had already been in place for just over 700 years.

The original charter for the market was granted in 1247 by King Henry III.

He is one of only five English monarchs to spend more than 50 years on the throne.
