Fall in burglaries after home security campaign
BURGLARIES in the borough have fallen by eight per cent following a three-month "Lift it, Lock it or Lose it" campaign.
The Basildon Community Safety Partnership (CSP) launched the campaign to encourage residents to properly secure their doors, particularly UPVC ones, after it emerged that one third of burglaries in the borough occurred as a result of UPVC doors not being securely locked.
As part of the campaign, the CSP, a statutory body comprising agencies including Basildon Council and Essex Police, ran a series of roadshows demonstrating to residents how to properly secure their homes.
Police and council officers were on hand to speak to residents about tips and advice on how to prevent their homes from being burgled.

The CSP also funded and ran Operation Brightshadow as part of the drive to reduce burglaries.
During the week of the operation, police officers followed four prolific offenders to ensure they did not commit any further crime.
Councillor Malcolm Buckley, cabinet member with responsibility for community safety, said: "Not enough residents were properly securing their doors and windows and I am delighted that this campaign seems to have addressed that.
"More and more residents are now lifting the handle, locking the door and then taking the key out.
"As a result we have seen eight per cent fewer burglaries."
"This is an excellent result which has meant that we have had fewer victims of this traumatic crime."
Acting Inspector Cathy Calder, from Essex Police, is pleased with the fall in burglaries, but warned against complacency.
"I am really pleased that residents have taken steps to secure their property against burglars," he said.
"Although Basildon is a safe place to live, it doesn't mean we can get complacent. I would continue to urge residents to 'lift it, lock it or lose it' so that we can drive down the number of burglaries even further."
