Gangster Squad (15) Ruben Fleischer's crime thriller looks at the Los Angeles Police Department's attempts to thwart the East Coast Mafia's attempts to get a foothold in California in the 1940s and 1950s.

Sean Penn is on prime form as gangster Mickey Cohen who wants to establish his own personal fiefdom in LA but the LAPD unofficially sets up a crack team of cops to scupper his plans.

Nick Nolte plays LAPD chief 'Whiskey' Bill Parker, the man who assembles the secret team with Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Gionvanni Ribisi, Robert Patrick and Michael Pena among the squad he puts together and Emma Stone starring as Cohen's moll Grace Faraday.

Trailers for Gangster Squad last year generated quite a buzz online and with such a strong cast, it looks like being a must-see crime drama in the mould of LA Confidential. Out Thursday, January 10.

Set in 19th century Paris, Hugh Jackman stars as Valjean, a thief and convict whose life changes when he agrees to look after factory worker Fantine's daughter Cosette. Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Seyfried also star. Out on Friday, January 11.
