RAINY weather didn't dampen Maldon's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Sunday as dozens of residents competed in an It's a Knockout competition.

Battling not only the elements but also an inflatable assault course, the teams showed their true British resilience by not giving up.

As rain-soaked spectators cheered from the sidelines at Promenade Park, it was entertainment company Reece Productions which took first place.

The event, organised by local businesses and Maldon District Council, was part of the town's Big Jubilee Lunch – a nationwide event that saw thousands of residents coming together to celebrate the Queen's 60-year milestone.

There were scores of other events across the Maldon district, from school fetes to picnics and street parties.

Town mayor Peter Stilts said: "The It's a Knockout competition was fantastic and everyone seemed to be having great fun.

"The true British weather didn't put people off and I was really impressed with everyone who took part.

"I was so impressed with the way Maldon celebrated the Diamond Jubilee, and we had so many events and everyone really enjoyed themselves, which was brilliant.

"I lit the jubilee beacon the following evening and as a fireman for 29 years it was strange to be starting fires!

"But it was a brilliant way to mark the event and so many people turned out to see it."
