POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a mugging in Chelmsford late on Friday night.

A 19-year-old Chelmsford man had been using his mobile phone near the junction of Loftin Way and Beehive Lane when he was asked for a cigarette at around 10.30pm.

He was then punched and kicked by a stocky white teenager aged 16 to 19 years of age who stole his wallet and black Sony Erickson camera-phone.

Paramedics took the man to Broomfield Hospital and he was released after treatment after being treated for concussion and bruises.

He described the mugger as 5ft 9ins tall, clean shaven with short fair hair and wearing a light jacket and dark trousers.

PC Nick Riley said: "This was a nasty unprovoked assault and we are working with local neighbourhood policing teams to discover his assailant."

The officer can be contacted on 0800 333 4444 extension 60320.

“Please don't get me wrong I am far from saying Chelmsford is perfect. Without doubt things have got worse crime wise and given the choice I would much rather live in a quiet little village but everyone has a real downer on Chelmsford and I really don't think it is any worse than say Braintree or Colchester. Like you say the people responsible for the over development of the town have a lot to answer for.”

“That may be Ben but, you have to admit, Chelmsford is really going downhill fast over a very short period of time. This is as a direct result of the heinous overdevelopment of our region. I hate living here now and I blame the council entirely for allowing our region to fall under this mire of disgraceful and frightening crime.”

“About as safe as most large towns I would imagine Gwen. Unfortunately it is the type of society we live in now. See stories of a similar nature in Clacton, Witham, Waltham Abbey. Crime isn't just within the boudaries of Chelmsford”

“Further to comments I've seen on other stories on this website, just how safe is Chelmsford after dark?”
